The End of the Paneling

This morning, the first thing we did when we woke up was knock a hole in the wimpy, warped paneling in our kitchen nook and start yanking it down. We knew we wanted to do this, but there's nothing like eating your cereal about 3 feet away to make you start right away!

So, here's the funny thing. We knew the paneling had been a tad poorly put up, or that it had at least mega warped. You could tap on it and push it down to the wall under it, which seemed rather sturdy. We couldn't paint such a wavy disaster, so it had to come down. Babak whacked a hole, yanked a panel down, and yanked another, which revealed a name written on the wall. Just as he was saying, "Well, we know who didn't hang this well" I read the name, ----- Ashley. See that last name? Yup, they're some kin to me and live in our town.

Fab-u-lous. That was pretty funny, though.

Once we thoroughly destroyed the paneling in the nook, along with Marie's help as she stayed with us last night, we headed back to the master-suite-to-be. This room was notorious for it's three walls of paneling and it's one wall of... not paneling. The fourth wall had wiggly drywall. You could also hear (at a normal speaking tone) anything being said in the bedroom it shares a wall with. Clearly, all four walls had to come down.

Babak took down one piece and we realized it wasn't large 4x8 sheets or anything, but each panel was a separate wooden board.

We took down (with a rather significant deal of effort...) the first wall, which included two doors and this odd pushed in corner that has the closet on the other side.

We found pretty much what we expected, damaged plaster.

After taking a break for a while, Babak decided we'd do the back wall next and pulled down a middle board first.

That's when we realized we had windows on the back wall! I started working to the left and he went to the right, and we found the triple windows we announced in our last post. COOL! All of the sudden, our master bedroom felt much more master-ful!

Sure enough, we kept at it on the outside wall and discovered we actually have not one, but two pairs of windows on that wall as well!

Wild! Unfortunately, we don't think the glass windows are under the insulation... so far all we've noticed is plywood. But frankly, who knows? More exciting adventures at home tomorrow!

  1. That is crazy how it has evolved into some random "masterpiece" throughout the years - but wtg on your amazing progress!
